“Han Kuo-yu Vogue” Backed by Three Huge Rallies Is the Awakening of Colorless Forces

China Times Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

November 16, 2018

 Translation of an Excerpt

At his third large-scale rally, in Gangshan, KMT Kaohsiung mayoral candidate Han Kuo-yu, following his first in Fengshan and his second in Chishan, a record-breaking 100,000 supporters swarmed in, with the singing of songs moving people’s hearts and with cell phone flashlights brightening up the night sky. Han Kuo-yu’s three huge rallies never scolded or attacked his opponent, nor did he resort to accusations on the Internet; yet hordes of Han Kuo-yu supporters, however, crowded every location, converging into a powerful "Han Kuo-yu vogue," sweeping the whole island of Taiwan and even spilling over to the overseas Chinese communities.

Starting from "landing in Fengshan," "night assault on Chishan" to "marching toward Gangshan," following the surge of Han Kuo-yu’s popularity, the Green camp leveled accusations from Green media to the Internet, saying that if Han was elected, Kaohsiung would be sold out, annuities for elderly farmers would be revoked, and Linyuan and Daliao Districts would become a zone for funeral parlors; accusing Han Kuo-yu of "gangland connections," "being a mesmerizing drug," "being a jingoist," and having received financial support of 1 billion RMB from the Mainland. These baseless accusations not only failed to harm Han Kuo-yu’s popularity, they instead brought out more powerful galvanizing force from his supporters.

Han Kuo-yu insisted on engaging in a clean and impeccable election campaign, urging political figures and political parties not to forget their original motives and their pledges to the voters. This instead has contrasted with the habitual rumor-mongering campaign literature and electioneering trickery of the DPP, which are shameless. Han said that the people wanted change, and the most important factor was the ineffectual DPP governance at both the national and local levels, adding that if it didn’t do a thorough soul-searching, it would be jettisoned by the electorate.

The rise of Han Kuo-yu has proclaimed that Blue and Green needed not be obsessed with factions, money, and political slogans; it also countered the malicious groups that post articles on the Internet, and declared that the people are the biggest party in Taiwan. Han Kuo-yu’s Kaohsiung experience has corroborated that Taiwan has transcended Blue and Green, and that the tide of the colorless awakening has foretold the arrival of an era for upgraded democracy in Taiwan.
