President Tsai Still Didn’t Understand the New Vox Populi

China Times Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

December 1, 2018

 Translation of an Excerpt

The DPP suffered a stunning defeat this time; President Tsai Ing-wen, after the announcements of the ballot counting, resigned as chairwoman of the DPP on the same evening. Premier Lai Ching-te and Presidential Secretary-General Chen Chu also verbally tendered their resignations, but they were both asked to stay on. After being confirmed to stay on, Premier Lai’s attitude was no longer rigid on such issues as a nuclear-free homeland and cross-Strait exchanges at the local level. It looked like the DPP government had indeed accepted the baptism of the latest vox populi, but has the DPP government, including President Tsai Ing-wen, truly bowed their heads before the vox populi and democracy?

In several public statements, President Tsai admitted defeat in the elections, but the reasons given for the defeat were "the public in society had not kept up" and "the effect of communication had not kept up” as she said in her “professional lingo." These statements show that she considers herself as a prophet; what she wanted to say is: “I represent progressive values, but being president I was too busy, having no time to profess my instructions, hence you people didn’t understand. From now on, I will stand on the front line, giving answers to the people directly, then Taiwan’s society would become united.”

President Tsai still believes herself that she is where the truth lies; with such betrayal of public opinion, it is no wonder that, in the post-election surveys, those who indicate that they are willing to support President Tsai in the next presidential election occupy a proportion of a meager 4.2%; for an incumbent President whose remainder of term in office is nearly half and has not abandoned re-election, it is embarrassing indeed! If the situation continues like this, in the end, she will inevitably have to embrace an extreme minority of the fundamentalist faction for seeking warmth, relegating herself to a failed presidency with unprecedented low support of public opinion.

In these local elections cum plebiscite elections, the voters have clearly demonstrated the mainstream values in Taiwan, that is, a little less ideology, a little more pragmatic development, rejecting fierce political fighting, and expecting that a president for all the people return to the midway and rational mainstream values. This is precisely truly loving Taiwan.
