The results of legislative by-elections in four districts in as many as cities and counties were revealed: DPP retained the two legislative seats in Sanchong District of New Taipei City and Madou District of Tainan City, and the KMT’s Ko Cheng-fang (柯呈枋) won in Changhua legislative by-election.
The by-election in Kinmen was a big flip: Chen Yu Zhen (陳玉珍), a KMT member who ran as an independent in a six-way race, won the election, the first female legislator in Kinmen. After the victory, Chen said she would not rule out the possibility of rejoining the KMT.
Yesterday, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) stressed that despite the end of legislative by-elections, challenges were still at hand. Luo Wen-jia (羅文嘉), DPP Secretary-General, indicated that to the DPP, the results of by-elections did not really win but stanched the bleeding.
Yesterday evening, former New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu (朱立倫) indicated that in the legislative by-elections, John Chen (鄭世維) and Xie Long-jie (謝龍介) had done their best. Chu said that in the DPP’s strongholds, the KMT almost tied in the elections. Though Chen and Xie failed to win, Chu added, the KMT had seen the dawn of reversing the political tide.
