Who Can Really Make Taiwan Prosperous?

China Times Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

April 21, 2019

 Translation of an Excerpt

Just when Han Kuo-yu fans believed that the KMT Party Central had been planning toward drafting Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-yu, who ranked first in opinion polls, to be the standard-bearer in the 2020 presidential election, out of the blue appeared a super tiger— Terry Guo indicated that he would enter the KMT primary. This not only made Han fans feel a setback, it also made diehard Han fans, who had said that they would not vote if it was not Han, extremely astonished.

In any case, in the nine-in-one local elections last November, Han Kuo-yu churned a tide, crushing the DPP’s aura; he relied on what he had said about the hardships of the people—the true picture of goods not being shipped out, people not coming in, people not making money, demanding that the Kaohsiung electorate who had long voted for the DPP government to make a change, verily he won the identification of the majority of Kaohsiung citizens.

Han Kuo-yu and Terry Guo each have their respective strong suits; Han Kuo-yu won in Kaohsiung City, and after he won election, his related approaches, such as his planning for “grassroots economics” and a “free trade economic zone” for the development of the Greater Kaohsiung area, have shown, without question, that he truly set as top priority making people prosperous. He said that he would recognize the “1992 Consensus" under "economics100%, politics zero" in order to strive for the economy by sweeping away all interferences.

While if Terry Guo, as an outstanding leader of a super transnational enterprise, wants to seek the highest office in the land, of course he will also want to serve all people; hence, he has emphasized that "when one calculates gains, he should calculate the gains for the country." Therefore, for Mayor Han and Terry Guo, both their determination and strength for action to strive for the economy and livelihoods of the people, are unquestionable. Nevertheless, in order to enable all people in Taiwan to make money and become prosperous, besides motivation and capability, one must have an in-depth understanding of "international economic trends" and "Taiwan's economic malaise." Otherwise, with the wrong prescription, it could well make the economy worse and worse.

For this reason, if Chairman Guo, in the position of global industrial leader, besides continuing to strive for the economy, can voluntarily care for the economically disadvantaged, and let Mayor Han “transcend Kaohsiung City,” standing in the position of President of the Republic of China, changing the current situation of Taiwan’s disadvantageous structure for economic development and can make good use of Cabinet members such as the types of Chairman Guo, it would be a dream combination to strive for Taiwan's economy.
