Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je announced that he would officially establish a new political party named "Taiwan People’s Party" on August 6th to seek district legislators and at-large legislators nominated on the party list.
Ko Wen-je called a press conference at 10 am this morning, stressing that the "Taiwan People's Party means that the party uses Taiwan as the name, and its foundation is the people. Taiwan is us and we are the people; Taiwan needs an opportunity of choice outside the Blue and Green.”
August 6th is not only the birthday of Chiang Wei-shui, leader of the social movement during the Japanese colonial period, but also the 60th birthday of Ko Wen-je. The party’s name is also an eponym of the first modern political party in Taiwan established by Chiang Wei-shui. Core staffers emphasized that the idea was to stress the linkage between Chiang and Ko through the founding date.
To this, the Green camp keeps a low profile, worrying that the Ko’s establishing a political party would impact Tsai Ing-wen’s electoral prospects. The Blue camp, however, indicated that Ko Wen-je’s organizing a political party was not a surprise, saying that in the KMT's presidential primary, the cross-referencing opinion polls already included Ko Wen-je.
