Face Masks as Bullets Won’t Allow the World to See Taiwan’s Better Face

United Daily News Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

April 15, 2020

 Translation of an Excerpt

The coronavirus pneumonia pandemic has made the entire United States enter a "state of serious disaster", with a scale unprecedented in history. President Trump has aimed his guns at the World Health Organization (WHO), accusing it of being China-centric and causing the failure of global pandemic control. Trump attacks the WHO, while drawing his sword at China. Trump is the latest leader among the eight industrialized countries to adopt epidemic control policies; as various countries are busy in seeking anti-pandemic measures to minimize infections and fatalities, for the sake of his personal re-election campaign, he went back to settle old scores in order to shift the focus, oblivious to the need for cooperation in the face of the serious global pandemic situation, blatantly exposing his selfish nature. At the same time with this, Taiwan donates face masks on the one hand to manifest humanitarianism, while on the other helps Trump in the exchange of fire, showing a juxtaposition of roles.

Trump lambasts the WHO principally because his ratings have fallen behind in the presidential campaign. French President Macron indicated that he had “no intention of getting involved in the US-China war”, debunking the core of the question: Trump uses anti-China as anti-pandemic. The pandemic situation is causing international turmoil; the various countries sink and float in the collapsing old world order; who is happy to see opportunists utilizing a peril to create conflicts for profits? When populists use a requiem for pandemic souls as a battle hymn for attacking the WHO, the Tsai government should not think the people are on its side, reducing Taiwan’s success experiences in pandemic control to a bargaining chip in the struggle between superpowers. Otherwise, beating the virus, we could possibly lose room for survival.
