Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) was recalled as Kaohsiung City Mayor in a recall election held on June 6. Yesterday, KMT Chairman Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) presided over an emergency meeting with top KMT executives to deliberate on strategies in response to the upcoming mayoral by-election in the city.

KMT high echelons opined that “the KMT should pick itself up from where it fell,” urging the KMT to clearly declare its resolve to field someone within the KMT to seek victory in the by-election. According to a resolution made in the meeting, the KMT Central Standing Committee would hold its regular weekly meeting in Kaohsiung, instead of Taipei, on Wednesdays before the date of the by-election.

With regard to the Kaohsiung mayoral by-election, the KMT party central has come up with the following two possible plans after deliberations:

1)    The by-election shall be held within three months of the promulgation of Han being recalled in accordance with the Public Officials Election and Recall Act. The KMT would field someone suitable from the local younger generation. The party central has targeted a few suitable candidates.

2)    Should Han decide to file a lawsuit with a court to invalidate the recall election results against him, the mayoral by-election would not be held until the court handed down a decision on final appeal.
