KMT Press Release
July 23, 2007
Responding to Frank Hsieh’s remarks made during his visit in the United States, KMT spokesperson Su Jun-pin relayed what former premier Vincent Siew said on the matter:
Frank Hsieh said that the idea of cross-Strait common market would jeopardize U.S. interests. Vincent Siew likened the remarks to “deliberately dying a piece of white cloth black”, adding that “ Any policy beneficial to Taiwan is being criticized to be useless; no wonder that Taiwan has been in economic doldrums in recent years.” Vincent Siew went on to say that the economic and trade policies he proposed, including the cross-Strait common market, were to seek a way out for Taiwan, creating more job opportunities, finding greater markets for our exports. All these ideas conform to the best interests of Taiwan.
Besides, Vincent Siew pointed out that economic and trade normalization across the Strait not only would be conducive to the stability and security in the Taiwan Strait and the Asia Pacific, but also would prevent Taiwan from being marginalized in the Asia Pacific. The United States would be happy to see that happen. Earlier the U.S. had asked Taiwan to improve the economic and trade relations across the Strait, even saying that the Free Trade Agreement negotiations between the US and Taiwan would be affected, if unimproved. That means the stability in Asia Pacific is in the best interests of the US.
Su Jun-pin says that the DPP and Frank Hsieh have more than once deliberately distorted and blurred with political rhetoric the economic and trade policies proposed by Vincent Siew, trying to mislead the unwitting people and creating unnecessary anxiety in society. The reason for Frank Hsieh to do so is that he is not confident or capable of proposing any economic policies beneficial to Taiwan. “If he is sincere in trying to do good for Taiwan, he should present his policies publicly.” “Distorting other people’s policies to disguise his own incompetence means the people in Taiwan will suffer the consequences.”
