KMT Press Release

The Culture and Communications Committee
July 31, 2007

On July 31, KMT Secretary-General Wu Den-yih said that the KMT would not withdraw its plebiscite proposal. Yet, if the DPP were willing to withdraw its proposed plebiscite entitled “Joining the United Nations under the name Taiwan,” the KMT would defer its own entitled “Promoting a Pragmatic and Flexible Approach to Returning to the United Nations and Joining other International Organizations.”

Wu Den-yih pointed out two considerations why the KMT would consider deferring its “Returning to the UN” plebiscite proposal:

(1)To join or return to the UN or other international organizations is not the sole will of the DPP, but that of the 23 million ROC citizens. There is no need to demonstrate this wholehearted desire of the people through a plebiscite.

(2)The plebiscite on joining the United Nations, launched by the DPP, has resulted in tremendous pressure from the international community, especially the United States. The key political figures, such as Annette Lu and Frank Hsieh, all convey the clear message that the United States strongly opposes the plebiscite. The KMT would consider withholding or deferring its plebiscite proposal on the condition that the DPP withdraw theirs in order to encourage the DPP to take the overall situation and national interest into account as a first priority and in order to dispel any fear that “if the DPP should withdraw its version, while the KMT should continue to push its own, then the DPP would end up being the losers.”

Wu Den-yih states that the DPP always expresses their love for Taiwan in the wrong way and usually end up hurting Taiwan. In contrast, the KMT loves Taiwan in the right way. The KMT is submitting its plebiscite proposal because the version that the DPP proposes is flawed. If the KMT cannot propose a better or more pragmatic plebiscite version for the people to make their choice, how can the KMT face the 23 million Taiwanese people? Therefore, Wu stresses that it is the KMT’s obligation as a responsible political party to propose a better option for the people to choose.
