KMT Press Release

KMT’s Bid for UN Plebiscite Not Changed

July 31, 2007

Regarding the KMT’s drive for a plebiscite on “Returning to the UN”, KMT Secretary-General Wu Den-yih made a further comment on July 31: “The KMT does not consider withdrawing the “Returning to the UN” plebiscite bid at this moment. Instead, the KMT will push for the bid more actively.”

According to KMT spokesman Su Jun-pin, Wu said, “Only after the DPP withdraws its plebiscite proposal, would the KMT consider whether or not to defer its own proposal.” However, it does not follow that the KMT would immediately withdraw its proposal if the DPP does so. The KMT pushes for Taiwan’s return to the UN with responsibility. It is under this premise that the KMT would choose the best approach for Taiwan.

According to Su, the KMT’s plebiscite proposal to return to the UN is at once pragmatic and flexible. Even if the DPP takes a step back, the KMT would still push for Taiwan’s return to the UN using every plausible method, in accordance with the aspirations of the 23 million people of Taiwan.
