Ractopamine and Clenbuterol Controversy:
Ma Opposed to “One Country, Two Systems”
Source: Ma Ying-jeou’s Office August 20,2007
The Department of Health hinted on August 14 that it would end the ban on pork containing ractopamine or clenbuterol and announce new maximum residue levels, effective August 21. According to press reports, following angry protests from local breeders, the Department of Health, in a change of mind, decided to keep a ban on the pig feed additives for local pig farmers, while allowing the importation of pork containing low levels of the substances.
KMT Presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou criticized the idea of applying different standards to local pork products and imported ones, saying that two different standards should not be applied where food safety is concerned.
Ma said the government must also consider new WHO regulations on these substances and apply the same standard to local pork products and imported ones alike, especially since the health and well-being of 23 million ROC citizens are at stake.
