Wu: No Going Back in UN Plebiscite Push
KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung said in the party’s legislation forum today that “there’s no going back” in the party’s push for UN plebiscite, adding that “It has already been decided and should be carried out at all costs.” Wu reiterated that he would “assume full responsibility” for the decision and called for solidarity, hushing dissenting voices, now that a collective decision has been made by the whole party.
According to Wu, the only trick in DPP’s book is to manipulate the election by tying up election and plebiscite, since it knows only too well that it has failed so completely in its eight-year rule and cannot present a presidential candidate good enough to beat the KMT.” He went on to say, “The DPP abased itself to violence in parliament in a vicious attempt to block the legislation for the Central Election Commission, and sought to create tension in the Taiwan Strait by cooking up the plebiscite issue in the hope of winning sympathy from the electorate. Convinced that the KMT would fall for its trap and turn its back on the plebiscite, the DPP is prepared to brand the KMT as ‘not loving Taiwan’ and ‘Communist China’s sidekick.’ To the astonishment of the DPP, its scheme backfired after the KMT refused to “take the bait” and countered DPP’s proposal for admission to UN under the name Taiwan with its own UN plebiscite.” The situation has sparked flames of disagreement across the DPP camp, Wu indicated.
Wu said, “The KMT push for UN plebiscite would be consistent with the party’s long-standing stance, which upholds the Republic of China, opposes any form of Taiwan independence, and supports the development of peace in the Taiwan Strait. Under no circumstances should these objectives be compromised. Returning to the UN is the proposal of KMT Honorary Chairman Lien Chan during his capacity as Premier. During the KMT rule, Taiwan secured admission to international organizations including the International Olympic Committee, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and the World Trade Organization (WTO) under pragmatic, flexible designations.” The UN plebiscite sponsored by the KMT is in fact a continuation of the actions of the former KMT regime, he added.
“The KMT understands that seeking admission to the UN under the name Taiwan is by no means feasible; however, after careful evaluation, we have decided not to take a diametrically opposed position,” stressed Wu, “The decision to maintain an ambiguous stance regarding Taiwan’s designation in the UN plebiscite is, therefore, a campaign strategy.”
Wu said that “there is no going back” in KMT’s push for UN plebiscite, adding that “as it has already been decided, it should be carried out at all costs.” The Chairman also invited everyone to participate in the party’s “Better Economy and Return to the UN” rally in Taichung on September 15.
