Would the President Please Explain Why Taiwan Dropped 14 Places in the Economic Freedom of the World Rating?

Source: Ma Ying-jeou Office

In his address to Taiwan independence advocates at the World Taiwanese Congress assembly, President Chen Shui-bian accused KMT presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou of wanting to become the Chief Executive of “Chinese Taipei” under the jurisdiction of Communist China, “The KMT is trying to copy our actions, which is fine, just make sure to get it right.” Ma campaign spokesperson Lo Chih-chiang cited the fact that major international rating agencies have lowered their ratings for Taiwan’s competitiveness recently, “None of these would have happened had the President directed a small portion of his efforts in accusing the opposition of teaming up with Communist China to working on state affairs and economic issues.”

According to Lo, Taiwan has dropped heavily from the 24th place in 2006 to the 38th place in 2007 in the annual Economic Freedom of the World rating released by CATO Institute, trailing South Korea and becoming the bottom-placed of the Asian Four Tigers. Fitch Ratings, a prestigious rating agency, issued warning that Taiwan’s below-par financial performance might result in a downgrade in its sovereignty rating. “Has the President become so blind that he failed to see all these?” Lo questioned.

Lo said, “The DPP has been completely absent in Taiwan’s economic issues, which are the keys to Taiwan’s survival, in recent times.” “The DPP would not, could not, and dare not talk about economic issues. The only trick in their book is to spell trouble and create tension in foreign relations and cross-strait issues so as to use ideologies to cover up their incompetence and corruption,” he added.
