Transcript of the Press Conference Held upon Siew’s Return from U.S. Visit
Vincent Siew, KMT Vice Presidential candidate, recently concluded a visit to the US on behalf of his running mate Ma Ying-jeou. Siew returned to Taiwan in the morning of October 11.
Siew said in the press conference that the messages he received in the US contained three main points.
1.The mutual trust accumulated over the years between the Republic of China and the US has hit an all-time low due to foul play by Taiwan’s leader. During his visit, Siew made it clear to the US on several occasions that the KMT remained committed to the core values of “All for Taiwan and all for the people.” The KMT’s push for Taiwan’s return to the United Nations is an answer to the people’s expectations, a bid that would benefit the majority of people on Taiwan. Siew said the KMT would exercise caution and prudence to avoid “crossing the thin red line” which could threaten US-Taiwan mutual trust or cross-Strait peace and stability.
2.There is room for improvement in terms of US-Taiwan economic and trade relations. Both sides should strive toward the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) or a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA).
3.The future development of cross-Strait relations is being closely monitored by the US. Taiwan, as a principal in cross-Strait relations, certainly has the responsibility for acting like a “responsible stakeholder” and “peacemaker.”
