Press Release
October 18, 2007
KMT Honorary Chairman Lien Chan stressed today that defusing hostilities, lowering tensions, moving toward peace, and creating mutual prosperity are not only mainstream values shared by people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, but also the ultimate missions and goals that “I have been striving hard to achieve.”
In the morning of October 17 at the Macao Summit for World Chinese Businessmen, Lien pointed out that General Secretary of CCP Hu Jintao’s appeal made on October 15 for bringing a formal end to the state of hostilities in the Taiwan Strait through negotiations, reaching a peace agreement, underscores the importance and functions of the KMT-CPC Forums.
Lien noted that he had successfully overcome a series of obstacles to consummate the journey of peace to Mainland China in April 2005. Lien said his meeting with Hu paved the way for the consensus and common vision of putting an end to the state of hostilities in the Taiwan Strait and the signing of a peace agreement.
Lien pointed out that the KMT and CPC have jointly conducted three forums on economic, trade, and cultural affairs, three working sessions on protecting the rights of Taiwanese businessmen in Mainland China, four forums on industrial standardization, and other exchanges and dialogues for women, youth, agriculture, and education over the past two years. “These initiatives aim at creating a harmonious atmosphere in the Taiwan Strait and facilitating cross-Strait commercial and people-to-people exchanges at the same time,” said Lien.
