News of the Week
(Oct. 18-24, 2007)
1.KMT Presidential Candidate Ma Ying-jeou said on Oct. 16 that President Chen Shui-bian had gone to extremes in pushing for “Joining the UN under the Name Taiwan” in a final gasp for his political life.
Ma said, “It is immoral that President Chen used national resources to promote DPP’s UN bid and forced civil servants to do things that they were unwilling to do.”
Regarding the matter that the DPP government asked post offices to stamp the slogan “UN for Taiwan” on domestic and international letters, Ma also pointed out, “Post offices are for public services. How could it be used as a tool for the propaganda of a political party?” Ma went further to say, “The DPP used to criticize the KMT government for violating the principle of neutrality of administration. Now, the DPP not only violates that principle but also deviates from the upright in the governing of this country.”
“President Chen was right when he said that we are an ‘abnormal’ country. However, that’s because we have an ‘abnormal’ leader,” Ma added.
2.KMT Presidential Candidate Ma Ying-jeou said on Oct. 18, “The function of the Central Election Commission (CEC) is to reduce obstacles that might occur during elections. The CEC should not make proposals that might cause chaos. The ruling party has gone too far.”
