KMT News Release
KMT Vice Chairman Kuan Chong offered the following explanation regarding a Liberty Times report on October 30, which claimed that he visited Mainland China and exchanged views with the mainland on the plebiscite on whether Taiwan should return to the United Nations:
1.The KMT is pushing for the “return to the UN” plebiscite as a way of countering the DPP’s “join the UN under the name Taiwan” plebiscite, which is a ploy to drum up support for the DPP’s Presidential election campaign. The KMT’s “return to the UN” plebiscite focuses on Taiwan and aims to bring benefits to the people on Taiwan. It represents the collective voice of the people and poses no harm to Taiwan. The KMT had been completely free of external influence during the entire decision-making process, and is disinclined to heed any reaction from Mainland China regarding this issue.
2.On Oct. 3, I made a presentation at the KMT Central Standing Committee, titled “A briefing on KMT’s Return to the UN Plebiscite,” analyzing in detail the considerations and background for KMT’s push for such a plebiscite. To date, I have not been authorized by KMT superiors to exchange views on the “return to the UN” plebiscite with public figures outside Taiwan.
3.The Liberty Times report on October 30 on my recent whereabouts is completely ill-founded. I traveled to Guangzhou via Hong Kong on October 25 to attend a ceremony bestowing upon me a certificate of Visiting Professor at Jinan University in Mainland China. I returned to Taiwan early in the morning of October 26 and attended a public event in the afternoon in Tainan City. I have no idea as to the “meeting with Mainland Chinese figures on October 26” that the Liberty Times alleged.
