News Release
KMT Culture and Communications Committee
November 01, 2007
In response to a news headline of the United Daily News that “The KMT removes Unification, and deletes the 1992 Consensus,” KMT spokesperson Su Jun-pin explained, “The KMT has always advocated the principle of reciprocity and mutual benefits to promote peaceful development in the Taiwan Strait.” Su continued to say, “All this surely must be based on the ‘1992 consensus,’ which has been clearly incorporated in the KMT’s party platform. There should be no room for any other interpretation.”
Su pointed out, “The annual paper of ‘Central Missions’ usually contains few words, and omission of the ‘1992 consensus’ on it does not mean any change on the KMT’s position. The ‘1992 consensus’ has already been incorporated in the party’s platform, which is higher than the annual paper of ‘Central Missions.’” Su went on to say, “The ‘Central Missions’ paper is about working guidelines for a particular year, and it is impossible for the paper to contain every item. Omission of the ‘1992 consensus’ does not mean any change.”
Su explained that, while an ad hoc committee discussed the “KMT Central Missions for 2008” paper, which was passed by the KMT Central Standing Committee yesterday (October 31), there were indeed some modifications on its wording. However, the KMT did not change its principles, Su added. In fact, he said, “The part regarding the cross-Strait relations in this paper still follows the principles of reciprocity and mutual benefits to promote the peaceful development in the Taiwan Strait. It goes with saying that all this surely must be based on the ‘1992 consensus.’” Su said that there should be no room for any other interpretation.
Su remarked, “The ‘1992 consensus’ has already been incorporated in the party platform, which was ratified in 2005 by the Party National Congress, which meets every four years. There should be no necessity to put it into the ‘Central Missions’ paper every year. If all principles of the KMT should be listed in the ‘Central Missions’ paper, then how about the principle of ‘Everything for Taiwan and everything for the people,’ which was also incorporated in the party platform by the Party National Congress this year. Should the KMT also list this principle on the ‘Central Missions’ paper every year in the future?”
