News of the Week

(Nov. 1-7, 2007)

1.KMT Presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou stressed on Nov. 3, “The ruling party is certainly culpable for the fact that surging gasoline and commodities prices have affected people’s livelihood, but the main problem is that the government offers no solutions to revive our economy.”

Ma said, “I believe that as long as investment, consumption and income go up, people will not be alarmed that much by the surging commodity prices. The problem is that people are hesitant to invest here in Taiwan. Many Taiwan businessmen make profits on the mainland. Why did they choose to list on the Hong Kong stock market, instead of listing in Taiwan? If the unnecessary economic restrictions still cannot be lifted, how could it be possible for Taiwan businessmen to have the willingness to come back? ”

Ma went further to say, “It is not necessary to spent a lot of money in pushing for a policy. As long as it is done right, it will create huge benefits.”

2.KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung stressed in a press conference on Nov. 1, “The KMT’s cross-Strait policy is to defend the Republic of China and safeguard Taiwan’s security, based on the principle of the ‘1992 Consensus’,” Wu said, “Cross-Strait policies in the KMT Charter and Platform were passed by the Party’s National Congress. The annual Central Missions papers only set down annual goals for the party in the coming year. Their rankings are different. The fact that the ‘1992 Consensus’ is not listed in the Central Missions paper this time does not mean that it has also been deleted from the Party Charter and Platform. The KMT has not changed its cross-Strait policies.”

3.KMT Presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou said, “The ‘1992 Consensus’ has always been my policy. It has never changed. I played a leading role in incorporating the ‘1992 Consensus’ into our Party Platform when I served as Party Chairman. Nothing has been changed because of the election. In the past, I talked about the ‘1992 Consensus’. I will continue to talk about it. Let’s stop making a fuss over this. I think the focus should be on bread and butter issues of the people.”
