News of the Week

(Nov. 8-14, 2007)

1.KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung and People First Party (PFP) Chairman James Soong announced in a joint press conference that the KMT would offer the PFP a quota of four legislator-at-large nominations. Those recommended by the PFP will join and represent the KMT in the upcoming legislative elections.

2.KMT Presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou said on Nov. 10, “The way President Chen Shui-bian responded to people’s complaints over their living conditions is inappropriate. Instead of loving the people, President Chen has hurt the people. Up until now, President Chen and Vice President Lu are still not willing to recognize the fact that people are suffering. Whenever there are people heckling, they think it’s faked. It is terrible that they have this kind of mentality. They are distancing themselves from the people.”

3.Former President Lee Teng-hui lashed out at the government by saying, “ The government has lost its orientation in polices. Although many Premiers have come and gone, people still cannot foresee Taiwan’s future.”

Lee also said,” The government ‘One benefit a Week’ policy benefits only specific people, not the general public. The problems of low-birth rate and aging society are getting serious in Taiwan. The gap between the rich and the poor has been widening. How could people love Taiwan if they are in hunger.”

4.On Nov. 12, Honorary Chairman of Microelectronics Corp. Robert Tsao ran half-page advertisement in three major newspapers, calling on the Blue and the Green camps to push for a “Cross-Strait Co-existence Act”. However, President Chen Shui-bian responded, “This is the Taiwan version of an Anti-Session Act, which is tantamount to a ‘capitulation’ for Taiwan.”
