Press Release

November 21, 2007

In response to President Chen Shui-bian’s malicious accusation that the KMT’s “return to UN” plebiscite was “a plebiscite trumpeting Taiwan’s unification with Mainland China,” KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung issued a strongly-worded rebuttal on November 21 by saying that the KMT’s “return to UN” plebiscite “carries the important mission of safeguarding the nation”. “It is a plebiscite that promotes national security, unlike the DPP’s ‘UN admission’ plebiscite, which would bring nothing but warfare and disaster to the country. This is why the KMT insists on pushing for the ‘return to UN’ plebiscite, to safeguard the country,” noted Wu.

Wu indicated,” The DPP’s ‘ UN admission’ plebiscite means changing the name of the country, altering the status quo, and leading the country to war, perils, and disaster, while the KMT’s ‘return to the UN ’ plebiscite safeguards national security and defends the Republic of China.”

Wu stressed that the KMT launched the “return to UN” plebiscite not just to counter the DPP’s “UN admission” plebiscite (which defines Taiwan as an independent state) but also to use the Republic of China as a counter against Taiwan independence. According to Wu, the absence of the KMT’s proposed plebiscite might lead the people to the false belief that Taiwan independence as upheld in the DPP’s proposed plebiscite represented the mainstream value in Taiwan. “The KMT’s proposed plebiscite acts like a safety valve for Taiwan, providing the people with an option for peace and security,” noted Wu.
