Ma Ying-Jeou’s Final Statement during Appellate Trial
November 30, 2007
I would like to thank Your Honors for your careful considerations in the trial. My counsels have explained in great detail the “objective nature” of the discretionary funds that require receipts for accounting and auditing and my “subjective recognition” of the nature of the discretionary funds that require receipts for accounting and auditing. My counsels have provided adequate proof that I did not recognize the discretionary fund as a source of illegal income, nor did I harbor any intent or commit the deeds of embezzlement or fraud.
Last but not least, I shall make it clear that even now, I still feel deeply rankled sitting at the defendant’s dock in a court of law. I find it hard to believe that I, who have always abided by the code of integrity, should be indicted over charges of corruption. Seeing my innocence and integrity questioned is more painful to me than losing my life. The District Court ruling has declared my innocence based on careful assessment of the design, historical background, and common administrative practices involved in the use of the discretionary funds as well as the subjective recognition of fund users and those involved in the reimbursement process. The ruling stands impeccable in terms of factual evidence and applicable laws. I hereby appeal to you to sustain the original ruling and overrule the appeal of the prosecution. Thank you.
