KMT Press Release
January 8, 2008
The KMT released a brand-new CF on January 7 featuring Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung urging voters to show up at polling stations in the upcoming legislative elections. “Cast your vote, or suffer Chen Shui-bian’s smirk!” said Wu, who urged voters to focus their support on the KMT and its candidates on January 12 and not to waste their votes on other parties’ candidates.
Calling the upcoming legislative elections “unfair,” Wu criticized the Central Election Commission (CEC) for abasing itself by serving the DPP against the KMT. “The CEC has totally given up its role as an independent body responsible for election affairs. Despite the KMT’s repeated compromises, the CEC insists on adopting a voting procedure that will certainly go wrong. This makes people wonder if the DPP is trying to spark chaos in order to suspend the elections. The DPP and the CEC must assume full responsibility should anything go wrong in the upcoming elections,” said Wu.
Wu also lambasted the DPP’s attempts to ruin the elections; “(Government Information Office Director) Shieh Jhy-wey was trying to fool the people when he said that in the US, it would be acceptable for voters to take blank ballots out of the polling stations. Shieh was inciting voters to violate the law. The CEC has already decided that voters are free to refuse plebiscite ballots. Yet the CEC’s commercials and advertisements, which feature the things Shieh said in DPP’s election campaign rallies, have not made everything very clear. The DPP broke the law by dismissing heads of local election committees and appointing ill-qualified replacements. Just how far does the DPP plan to go in destroying the neutrality of election bodies?” lamented Wu.
Speaking of Chen’s recent exclusive interviews with pro-Green local media, Wu said there would be no problem at all if Chen were talking about national policies in his capacity as the President on TV. “But he was speaking in the role of the DPP Chairman. He grants interviews only to the media he likes, and speaks for as long as he wants to,” said Wu, who openly asked the media to entitle him to the same treatment and invite him over for an interview.
Earlier, Wu told the media, “The DPP recently squandered millions of NTDs on a newspaper advertisement which features the KMT chairman and Presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeau as ‘Wanted Criminals.’ This was a mockery of democracy. Chen should stop acting like a coward and show the people his guts by proclaiming Martial Law rule and having us court martialed. Chen should not carry things too far.”
