KMT News Release

The Culture and Communications Committee

January 28, 2008

Huang Yu-cheng, director of the KMT Culture and Communications Committee, said that the KMT’s stance was not opposed to the plebiscite, but resolvedly rejected tying the plebiscite to the Presidential election. The KMT insisted that the plebiscite must be separated from the Presidential election. Regarding the Wu-Bian informal meeting last week which touched on the issue of a “defensive plebiscite,” Huang stated that the current administration should be a “caretaker” before May 20, and it was very unsuitable for such a government to propose a defensive plebiscite. The KMT considered such an action as inappropriate, and was opposed to it, Huang added.

Director Huang pointed out that KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung clearly stressed the KMT’s opposition to the defensive plebiscite under current circumstances during his meeting with President Chen Shui-bian, and Chairman Wu reaffirmed the KMT’s stance to de-link the plebiscite from the Presidential election. Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng and Tseng Yung-chuan, director of the KMT Central Policy Committee, both present at the Wu-Bian meeting, also held the same view on this issue.

Director Huang also stated that the KMT hoped to pass a “Support our country to return to the UN” resolution in the new Legislative Yuan to demonstrate the fresh popular mandate and express the common wishes of the 23 million people of Taiwan to the international community.
