As the public has expressed concern over the issue of whether my wife and two daughters have foreign passports or green cards, I hereby solemnly state:
1.The issue of a foreign passport
Among my wife and two daughters, my eldest daughter is the only person who holds a US passport, and my other family members do not. My elder daughter was born in the United States of America while my wife and I were studying there between 1974 and 1981. According to the laws of the Republic of China and of the United States of America, she has dual nationality, and she does indeed have a US passport. My wife, my younger daughter, and I do not have US passports, and furthermore, we have never applied for one.
2.The issue of a Green Card
In 1977, I applied for and received a Green Card as a prerequisite for a student loan and because I needed to find work to support my family. However, I did not use it in the late 1980s. (I cannot remember the exact year, but it should be around 1985.) Since then, I have always applied for US visas at the American Institute in Taiwan whenever I visit the US. According to US laws, by applying for a visa, one automatically forfeits one’s Green Card. My wife is in the same situation. As for my younger daughter, she has never had a Green Card.
Therefore, my wife and I gave up our Green Cards more than twenty years ago. For this reason, when someone asked me yesterday if “I hold a Green Card,” my answer was “No” because I gave it up a long time ago.
