Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung pointed out that the KMT won two consecutive elections as a result of strong party unity over the past year. Currently, the nation is facing a severe economic downturn, so the KMT must unite behind the Ma Ying-jeou administration to turn the situation around.

On July 26, the KMT will elect new members of the Central Standing Committee (CSC), the highest decision-making organ of the party. Chairman Wu made his remarks at the final CSC meeting today, pointing out that he was grateful for the arduous efforts of all CSC members in support of the January 12 legislative elections and the March 22 Presidential election, which achieved unprecedented victories in the Party’s history.

Chairman Wu stressed that when the KMT faced precarious situations, the solidarity of all party members turned things around. Since President Ma was sworn in on May 20 this year, the country has been facing factors beyond the government’s control, including rising crude oil prices, the subprime mortgage crisis, and an economic downturn. The ruling KMT had no other choice but to support the government, and called on all party members to work together to turn things around once again.

Chairman Wu went on to say that the Party should emphasize the three following points, which were within our grasp: (1) The past 8 years of Presidential involvement in corruption cases has come to an end. The KMT administration will conduct itself righteously and uphold the principles of clean government. (2) The KMT will end the DPP’s practice of manipulating populism by instigating communal conflicts and unification vs. independence confrontation that split the nation’s 23 million people. (3) The threat of war has been defused. The cross-Strait relations, therefore, will move towards peace, and there is almost no possibility of military conflict in the Taiwan Strait.

In conclusion, Chairman Wu stressed, “since the KMT has returned to power, the three aforementioned points will have a great impact on people’s lives, and the Party should continually make the people aware of them.”
