The KMT National Congress adopted several revisions to the Party Charter June 24, including a revision to Article 2, in which the tenet “Taiwan first, people’s interest a priority” was added. By doing so, it further demonstrates that the KMT would full-heartedly defend the Republic of China in Taiwan and prioritize, especially, the interests of the people on Taiwan.
In the second part of Article 7 of the Charter, the definition of “party members in spirit” has been expanded from “Mainland Chinese only” to “any non-ROC citizens”. Therefore, the wording “devotion to national unification” has been changed to “devotion to national peaceful development” to conform to the current situation.
However, in the Preamble of the Party Charter, “the pursuance of national reunification” remains unchanged.
For the ready reference of our readers, the Preamble of the KMT Party Charter is quoted as follows:
“The Kuomintang of China was founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen. It has endured multitude hardships and overcome great threats, leading the nation through revolution and establishing Asia’s first democratic republic.
“The course of its long history of renewal can be traced directly back to the China Revival Society, through the Revolutionary Alliance, the Kuomintang, the Chinese Revolutionary Party, to its present guise as the Kuomintang of China.
“The party follows the Three Principles of the People and the Five-Power Constitution. It is united in its adherence to the concept of constitutional democracy and seeking a strong, united and prosperous nation.
“It is hoped that all members of the Kuomintang maintain the traditional revolutionary spirit of the party in their hearts, acting and moving together.”
