KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung issued a statement of congratulations at the KMT Central Standing Committee on Nov. 5, 2008. The text follows:
.The United States of America is the most important ally of the Republic of China. We have attached great importance to each US Presidential election. This election was no exception.
.The KMT extends its best wishes and congratulations to Senator Barack Obama on his being elected the 44th President of the United States.
.The United States of America is the leader of the free world and a democratic model for countries which have adopted rigid constitutions. The US voters have demonstrated to the world that race is no longer an issue in the United States. The US has written a new chapter in the annals of democracy.
.When Mr. Ma Ying-jeou of the KMT was elected President of the Republic of China on March 22, 2008, President Bush praised Taiwan as a beacon of democracy to Asia and the world in a congratulatory statement. We believe that was not only the personal view of President Bush, but also the view of the people and the government of the United States.
.Given that the Republic of China and the United States of America are both beacons of democracy in the world, we sincerely hope that the Democratic government of the United States in the next four years will maintain friendly relations and continue cooperative ties with the Republic of China.
