On August 25, KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung went to Chia-Yi County and City to express his concern for the victims living in the typhoon-devastated areas. Chairman Wu paid particular attention to how the scenic areas around Alishan had fared and the progress in rehabilitation and reconstruction. Wu said that the road to Alishan should be reopened to traffic as soon as possible as Alishan was one of Taiwan’s most popular sightseeing destinations and also so it could help Taiwan’s tourist industry.
Afterwards Chairman Wu went to Minshiung Rural Town Hall to hear a briefing made by rural township executive Chen Fu-cheng concerning the disaster caused by Typhoon Morakot and the current state of reconstruction efforts. Wu said that Kaohsiung County and City had been harder hit than Chia-Yi County and City, adding that Chia-Yi County and City had recovered quickly because the local executives and people had worked together closely. In addition, Wu noted the KMT had designated a donation of NT$ 500,000 to Minshiung Rural Township from its total donation to the Interior Ministry. In the morning of August 25, Chairman Wu donated another NT$ 200,000 to Minshiung Rural Township for reconstruction on behalf of the KMT.
Chairman Wu reminded those present that Morakot had left in its wake an unprecedented amount of precipitation, with a whole year of rainfall coming down in just two days. Wu added that the local climate change was just a part of the global climate change, so no one could guarantee that it would never happen again. Wu warned that everyone would be put to the test to improve water management, flood prevention measures, and river dredging operations as a result of the challenges caused by Taiwan’s steep terrain.
Lastly, Chairman Wu, on behalf of the KMT, also donated NT$ 1 million to Chia-Yi City and NT$ 50,000 to the Lao Teng Sub-district as an expression of sympathy.
