Former President Chen Shui-bian and his wife Wu Shu-jen were both given life sentences on September 11 by the Taipei District Court, the court of first instance, in their corruption, forgery, and money-laundering cases. During his pronouncement of judgment, Presiding Judge Tsai Shou-hsun accused Chen’s daughter Chen Hsing-yu, Chen’s son Chen Chih-chung, Chen’s son-in-law Chao Chien-ming, and Lee Pi-chun of being involved in corruption in the State Affairs Funds scandal for having provided Wu with fraudulent invoices. Likewise, Tsai also accused Taiwan Cement Chairman Leslie Koo of fraud and money-laundering for his involvement in the Longtan Science Park Land Deal case. The collegiate bench filed charges against a total of eleven people in addition to the defendants in Chen’s existing cases. The new charges would be forwarded to prosecutors for further investigations and possible indictments. The number of people being accused by the collegiate bench is unprecedented.
