KMT Press Release
KMT Cultural and Communications Committee
October 8, 2009
KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung will step down on October 17. The Association of KMT Retirees held a Thanksgiving Tea Banquet on the 12th floor of the KMT party central building to pay their deepest respect to Chairman Wu for his unselfish contributions during his tenure.
In his speech, Chairman Wu said that, as of October 17, he will have served as KMT Chairman for 977 days, and his tenure was replete with significance as the KMT had regained power by prevailing in the 2008 Legislative Elections and the 2008 Presidential Election. Chairman Wu indicated that, after returning to power, he had twice led delegations to visit the Mainland and met with the Chinese Communist Party General-Secretary Hu Jin-tao, helping cross-Strait relations evolve from the brink of conflicts and clashes toward the direction of mutually beneficial, win-win and peaceful development. Chairman Wu said that he felt fortunate as well as grateful to have been ordained to see such a turn in the tides.
Chairman Wu stated that the KMT had crossed through three centuries, having been founded 116 years ago, and had established the first democratic republic in Asia 98 years ago. Therefore, it was his high honor to be a loyal KMT party member, Wu added.
Commenting on the controversies arising from the nomination of county and city executives, Chairman Wu said that it broke his heart that the Central Standing Committee had no alternative but to adopt a resolution to expel members who insisted on running in the year-end county and city executive elections without KMT nomination. Chairman Wu added that he had had to do it for the sake of party solidarity. Chairman Wu stressed that the KMT could not be held together by just sentiment and camaraderie; it also required discipline, adding that every party member should work together to maintain party unity.
