It’s Regrettable that the DPP Deliberately Ignores Issues Addressed at Chiang-Chen Meeting
KMT Cultural and Communications Committee
Dec. 23, 2009
KMT spokesman Lee Chien-jung said today that it was regrettable that the DPP deliberately ignored the issues addressed at the fourth “Chiang-Chen” Meeting. Lee said that the DPP was only adept at brainwashing its supporters with one-sided and misguided information and mobilizing its supporters to take to the streets. Regrettably, this is counterproductive if the opposition party honestly desires to engage in sincere policy debates.
Therefore, the KMT yesterday posed DPP chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen five frank questions. Today, the KMT would like to pose an additional five questions to DPP chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen. We hope to receive a straightforward response.
KMT spokesman Lee Chien-jung issued the following five questions regarding the DPP’s stance on cross-Strait policies.
1. Chairwoman Tsai, you are an expert on international economics and trade. You used to serve in the National Security Council, the Mainland Affairs Council, and the Executive Yuan. Do you think that cross-Strait economic and trade relations need to be normalized? From January next year, Mainland China products will enjoy tariff-free treatment in ASEAN countries and vice versa, whereas Taiwan products will continue to be levied tariffs ranging between 9 and 10 percent. Given such circumstances, how will Taiwan be able to compete with other countries?
2. Chairwoman Tsai, you said that the government’s cross-Strait polices were “self-degrading” and “selling out Taiwan.” Can you identify which of the nine agreements signed with the Mainland since the KMT came to power in May 20, 2008 you consider “self-degrading” or “selling out Taiwan?” Is it in Taiwan’s best interests to adopt a cross-Strait policy that is confrontational and dominated by ideology? Where exactly would the DPP lead Taiwan? Some people say that the DPP has no Mainland policy and that the DPP only endorses anti-Mainland China and Taiwan independence policies. What are your thoughts on this?
3. Under the Chen Shui-bian administration, the DPP government allowed the importation of a total of 936 additional agricultural products from the Mainland. On the other hand, President Ma promised again and again that the government would not open Taiwan to the importation of Mainland agricultural products or laborers when signing a cross-Strait ECFA. Why have you continually disseminated distorted information to the public, purposely fomenting public hysteria?
4. There is no denying that cross-Strait exchanges had grown closer and more diversified over the past ten years. Do you dare to make public the records of investments, visits or other exchange activities in the Mainland of high-level DPP party workers or DPP public officials?
5. Mainland China has been Taiwan’s biggest trading partner since 2003 and currently 40% of Taiwan’s exports go to the Mainland. Are you aware of these facts? How will the DPP safeguard Taiwan’s investments and enterprises in the Mainland?
