Hsinchu County Legislative By-Election
Source: United Daily News
February 11, 2010
In a survey conducted by the United Daily News on the legislative by-election in Hsinchu County slated for February 27, former legislator Perng Shaw-Jiin, who is running in the election on the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) ticket, received a support rating of 34 percent, 5 percent ahead of his Kuomintang rival Cheng Yung-tang (29 percent). The news article pointed out that the main reason that the KMT candidate fell behind in the race in Hsinchu was because pan-Blue camp supporters in the constituency were not sufficiently invigorated to participate in the election. However, as 35 percent of Hsinchu County voters had not yet decided for whom they would vote, the outcome of the election was still up in the air.
In the survey, more respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the performances of both parties than satisfaction: 44 percent of those surveyed expressed dissatisfaction with the KMT’s recent performance while 29 percent expressed satisfaction; 41 percent of those surveyed expressed dissatisfaction with the DPP’s performance, with only 22 percent expressing satisfaction.
