Only 23 days remain before the five Special Municipalities Mayoral elections. The Xinbei City Special Municipality Mayoral election has the largest number of eligible voters of all the elections. Both pan-Blue and pan-Green camps are focusing their efforts in the final weeks before the election on garnering the support of the swing voters. The KMT is planning to organize medium and large-scale campaign activities in 29 rural townships, townships and cities in Taipei County 【Editor’s note: Taipei County has been upgraded to Xinbei Special Municipality, effective January 1, 2011.】. Chiang Cheng-yen, executive secretary of KMT candidate Eric Chu’s campaign headquarters, opined that the lack of passion among the voters was the biggest problem they were facing in the Xinbei race, so the key to success was to encourage greater voter turnout. Lin Hsi-yao, executive secretary of DPP candidate Tsai Ing-wen’s campaign headquarters, stated that they planned to hold at least 20 campaign events in Taipei County through soft-sell mobilization of DPP supporters who, in turn, hopefully would affect the swing voters by demonstrating their passion.
