December 6, 2010

On November 26, on the eve of polling day in the five Special Municipality elections, Sean Lien was shot in the face by a gunman during an election campaign rally. Sean Lien is the elder son of KMT Honorary Chairman Lien Chan, a former Vice President of the Republic of China.

Fortunately, Sean Lien’s wounds were not life-threatening and he made a speedy recovery. Accompanied by his family members, he quietly left the National Taiwan University Hospital before midnight last night to avoid the media. According to a friend of the Lien family, the main reason Sean Lien was eager to return home was that the hospital bed was too small to accommodate his 1.94m stature. The friend said that Sean Lien had difficulty sleeping well because he could not turn over easily.

One KMT official who had close relations with the Lien family called for the public to “stop taking advantage of Sean Lien’s misfortune and stop making groundless speculations about the 11/26 Shooting Incident.”

With regard to the progress of the investigation into the 11/26 Shooting Incident, prosecutors yesterday morning brought the main suspect, Lin Cheng-wei, from the Taipei Detention Center to the Criminal Bureau for a second lie-detector test, and Lin willingly answered all the prosecutors’ questions. According to media reports, the shooter’s testimony concerning his motivation was consistent, but he had become agitated when asked about certain details. The results of the lie detector test would be released next week at the earliest.

In a related story, information received by the prosecutors led them to believe that Lin Cheng-wei had not been motivated by a financial dispute. The prosecutors could not rule out the possibility that the suspect’s motivation had something to do with the election and they are currently examining the phone records of several politicians in order to determine whether any connections existed.

In addition, Interior Minister Jiang Yi-huah and Director General of the National Police Agency Wang Cho-chiun gave a report on the progress of the investigation into the 11/26 Shooting Incident to the Legislative Interior Committee this morning. Several days ago, Yen Ta-ho, chief prosecutor of the Taiwan Provincial Prosecutors Office, stated that the suspect’s motivation was the only point that needed further clarification. Minister Jiang stated his hope that the police and prosecutors would release details of the investigation after obtaining substantive evidence.
