The controversy over the 18% preferential interest rate severely undermined DPP Chairperson Tsai Ing-wen’s support rating. According to the China Times’ latest survey on who should represent the DPP to run in the 2012 Presidential election, Su Tseng-chang overtook Tsai Ing-wen as the most appropriate candidate with a 22% support rating to Tsai’s 20%.
After the completion of the five Special Municipality Mayoral elections last year, Tsai Ing-wen’s support rating had risen sharply and she was considered the best candidate to run in the 2012 Presidential election on behalf of the DPP, with a 28% support rating. However, since then Tsai Ing-wen’s support rating had declined by 8 percentage points, while Su Tseng-chang’s support rating rose from 20 to 22%.
The survey was conducted on January 14, with 860 people surveyed. The margin of error associated with this sample is plus or minus 3.3 % with a 95% confidence interval.
