The Ministry of Finance (MOF) announced that a customs mutual assistance agreement between Taiwan and India took effect on August 1. India is the fourth country to sign a customs mutual assistance agreement with Taiwan, after a similar agreement was signed by the latter with the US in 2001, with the Philippines in 2004, and with Israel in 2009.
Hwang Ding-fang, MOF Deputy Minister, stated that the agreement would boost clearance efficiency and be the legal basis for two-way authentication of authorized economic operators (AEO). The agreement would also improve relations between Taiwan and India, and could lead to the signing of an FTA with India in the future.
Huang stated that now that the two sides of the Strait had signed the ECFA, it was easier for Taiwan to cooperate and consult with other countries on similar agreements.
The customs cooperation agreement between Taiwan and India was signed in New Delhi, India on July 12 by Philip Ong (翁文祺), Taipei Economic and Cultural Center representative in New Delhi and PradeepKumar Rawat, director-general of the India-Taipei Association in Taipei.
Through cooperation, Huang said, the two countries could jointly enforce customs regulations and prevent customs irregularities. Moreover, the two countries would provide assistance in accordance with their domestic regulations, added Huang.
Huang stated that as a result of improved cross-Strait relations, more countries were willing to sign mutual assistance agreements with Taiwan.
