President Ma Delivers Second Inaugural Address

Yesterday, President Ma Ying-jeou was sworn in for his second term as the President of the Republic of China. He proposed “Five Pillars” in the high-profile address. The “Five Pillars” were (1) Enhancing the drivers of economic growth; (2) Creating employment and realizing social justice; (3) Developing an environment characterized by low carbon emissions and high reliance on green energy; (4) Building up culture as a source of national strength, and (5) Cultivating, recruiting and retaining talent.
President Ma also advocated the “Three Legs of National Security” to secure peace in Taiwan, namely, (1) Cross-Strait rapprochement to realize peace in the Taiwan Strait; (2) The use of viable diplomacy to establish more breathing space for ourselves in the international community, and (3) A strong national defense to deter external threats.
