The Kuomintang (KMT) Central Evaluation and Discipline Committee resolved on July 3 to expel former Cabinet secretary-general Lin Yi- Shih (林益世) from party membership.
After Next Magazine, a weekly tabloid sold in Taiwan, alleged in its latest issue that Lin had accepted NT$63 million (US$2.1 million) in bribes to help the Kaohsiung-based Ti Yung Co. (地勇選礦公司) secure a two-year contract when he served as KMT legislator two years ago, the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) under the Prosecutor-General’s Office launched an investigation into the case. After Lin admitted to a portion of the bribery allegations and issued a public statement of apology yesterday, the Taipei District Court granted an SIU petition to detain him incommunicado, drawing wide public attention as well as seriously hurting the KMT’s image and reputation.
Lin, who had long been cultivated by the KMT and had served in many important positions within both the party and administration, admitted to corruption, dealing a severe blow to the party’s reputation. Lin said that he was ashamed to face both the KMT and the country, and decided to withdraw his party membership. However, according to regulations stipulated in the KMT Charter, the KMT Central Evaluation and Discipline Committee resolved to expel Lin from party membership.
