During yesterday’s KMT Central Standing Committee meeting, Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) issued a statement in response to the corruption scandal involving Lin Yih-shih (林益世) ), former secretary-general of the Executive Yuan.
The full text of Ma’s statement is as below:
First. No matter how many people have been involved in Lin’s political scandal, no matter how high the level of those involved is, and no matter how wide-ranging the involvement of KMT members or government officials is, we will ask prosecutors to conduct investigations and prosecute exhaustively without any exception or compromise.
Second. We will turn the current crisis in clean governance into an opportunity for strengthening anti-corruption actions. Therefore, I will ask the executive branch and other related government agencies to spare no effort in conducting a thorough investigation of all “malignant tumors” that may lead to political corruption in order to eradicate possible inducements of corruption rooted in the political system, so that we can continuously build up a clean government by reforming existing systems.
Third. We must spare no effort to safeguard the value of integrity. When I first served as KMT chairman in 2005, on the occasion of a mayoral election campaign, I urged all KMT members to implement the fundamental values of “No bribery during election campaigns” and “No corruption by members of either the executive branch or the legislature”. Lin’s case reveals that it is not easy to uphold the above mentioned principles; however, all KMT members still have to make every effort to follow these guidelines at all times.
