 In Letter to the Editor run by Washington Times, Chu says cross-strait peace can’t do without ‘1992 consensus

Kuomintang Chairman and presidential candidate Eric Chu said it is highly important to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait as it is advantageous to Taiwan, the United States and mainland China.

 

In a Letter to the Editor published by the Washington Times on November 12, Chu said the “1992 consensus” supported by President Ma Ying-jeou helps avert a cross-strait war and secure a win-win-win result for the Taiwan-China-US triangle.

 

But failure of the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party in Taiwan in recognizing the consensus might change the status quo across the Taiwan Strait and stoke tension in the region – a situation not in US’ interest, Chu said.

 

He noted that DPP Chairperson and presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen said in a speech in Washington DC in June that she wants to maintain the status quo across the Taiwan Strait as well. “But she dodges all those questions on how the status quo can be maintained without the DPP recognizing the consensus’ political foundation,” Chu said.

 

Meanwhile, Beijing has repeatedly sent signals that “no 1992 consensus, no peace and stability, Chu added.
