On June 3, KMT spokesman Lee Chien-jung stated that the Tiananmen Square Incident in Beijing twenty years ago was a tragedy. Following 20 years of social and economic development and liberalization, the Mainland should have learned a lesson from the Incident, not allowing such an incident to occur again.
Lee said that democracy and the rule of law, as well as freedom and human rights, are universal values and the common objectives that both sides across the Taiwan Strait pursue in the process of the normalization of cross-Strait relations.
Lee remarked, “In the development of cross-Strait relations, both sides pursue economic cooperation, mutual benefits, and win-win situations. A society with openness, democracy, and tolerance of divers opinions are the dynamics of social progress, the basis of social harmony and the facilitator of cross-Strait peaceful development.
