KMT Press Release

KMT Cultural and Communications Committee

September 8, 2009

On September 8, Premier-designate Wu Den-yih, while holding his last working meeting as KMT Vice Chairman and Secretary-General, stressed that the government’s most urgent mission was to implement flood-prevention measures because it was the government’s duty to safeguard the lives and property of the people.  Wu added that he could not place too much emphasis on the significance of actions instead of words.  He stated that he had reached a consensus with President Ma Ying-jeou that, as soon as he took office as Premier, he would take charge of immediately speeding up the reconstruction in the disaster areas devastated by Typhoon Morakot.

Wu Den-yih said that he would again tender his resignation to Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung in the afternoon of September 8, and that he would sorely miss working for the KMT party central.  Wu indicated that although he had not been psychologically prepared to serve as Premier, the country’s current circumstances allowed him no room to hesitate in accepting or turning down the appointment to Premier.  Wu added that President Ma had discussed the appointment with him on three occasions, and when President Ma said “That is an order” on the third occasion, he was not able to refuse. Wu added that he immediately asked Taoyuan County executive Chu Li-lun to serve as the new Deputy Premier.

Wu said, “Chu and I would complement each other.  Chu’s expertise in finance and economics can be helpful to me.  I served as Nantou County executive and Kaohsiung City mayor, and I am familiar with the central and southern parts of Taiwan.  Chu is good at finance and economics and has a good reputation serving as Taoyuan County executive.  We can work with each other hand in hand.  Since I have accepted the appointment, I will work for the country with all my heart.”
