KMT Elects New Central Standing Committee

October 12, 2009

The ruling Kuomintang (KMT) on Sunday elected thirty-two Central Standing Committee (CSC) members, thirteen of whom are incumbent legislators. With 40 percent of the seats in the CSC, the legislative system remained the major influence after the election. The 18th KMT National Party Congress is slated to be held on October 17, when President Ma Ying-jeou will be sworn in as the chairman of the KMT.

With over 96 percent voter turnout, 1,529 party delegates cast ballots in the CSC member election. Former legislator Hong Yu-chin gained the highest number of votes.

The KMT’s CSC currently consists of thirty-nine members with one-year term. Among the thirty-nine, thirty-two members are directly elected by the party delegates and seven members are designated by the KMT chairman, including one for the head of the KMT Youth League and one for the head of the KMT Youth Affairs.

In addition, the KMT Central Evaluation and Discipline Committee yesterday decided to expel seven party members who had registered their candidacies to run in the year-end local elections without the KMT’s nomination, such as incumbent legislator Fu Kun-chi. In accordance with the KMT Charter, party members who are expelled from the KMT are allowed to reapply for membership two years after expulsion.
