The ruling Kuomintang (KMT) on Saturday held the first-ever Central Standing Committee (CSC) by-election. Twenty of the thirty-two central standing committee members were re-elected. Twelve of the thirty-two are legislators, so the Legislative Yuan continues to play a major role in the CSC.

Council of Agriculture Chairman Chen Wu-hsiung and Taichung City Deputy Mayor Hsiao Chia-chi are the only cabinet-level minister and city deputy executive in the CSC, respectively.

1,521 party delegates cast ballots in the KMT CSC by-election. The voter turnout was 94 percent.

KMT Secretary-General Chan Chun-po expressed satisfaction with the election results. Moreover, Chan said that the by-election for CSC members was held to stress the KMT’s policy of clean elections, adding that the newly elected members were representative, competent and balanced, so the CSC would be more effective in its role of coordinating the party and the government.  Chan said that he had confidence in the new CSC members.
