KMT Adopts Motion Against Pardon for Chen Shui-bian

The Kaohsiung City Council passed a motion the other day, requesting that outgoing President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) pardon ex-President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁). Many in the Green camp also expressed support for the motion. However, the KMT Central Standing Committee (CSC) yesterday adopted unanimously a motion calling on the Ma administration not to pardon Chen. The motion is considered a “show of support” for President Ma.

KMT Chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) said that Chen never apologized for the crimes for which he had been convicted, and that a number of criminal cases against him were still pending trial. Under such circumstances, Hung asked how the Ma administration could pardon Chen. According to Hung, whether Chen will be pardoned should be left for the incoming Tsai government to decide on or after May 20.

KMT CSC member Yao Chiang-lin (姚江臨) introduced this motion yesterday, which was passed unanimously, during a regular CSC session. Chairwoman Hung will officially pass on this resolution to President Ma.
