President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) issued formal apologies to the indigenous people of Taiwan yesterday. In response, KMT Chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) stated that it was commendable to apologize for past wrongs, but the apologies must not be just symbolic, adding that the government should take concrete actions to improve the livelihood of aborigines in Taiwan, instead of making hollow remarks.

All political party leaders, except Hung, attended the ceremony chaired by President Tsai at the Presidential Palace in Taipei.

Hung explained why she chose not to attend the ceremony, saying “It is imperative that politicians speak the truth. Therefore, if they chose to attend the ceremony, they should attend in a deeply sincere manner. I refuse to attend because I don’t think that the ceremony is a venue for speaking the truth, nor do I want to be seen endorsing Tsai because I question Tsai’s sincerity. We will traverse our own path.”

Hung questioned whether or not Tsai was making use of aboriginal perspective of history to eliminate Han Chinese People’s perspective of history, or even engaging in desinicization to create a new perspective of history. “It is inevitable that people will question the DPP’s real motives,” added Hung.

Hung went on to say that she wanted to thank Taiwan’s aboriginal peoples for supporting the KMT, adding that they were the KMT’s staunchest supporters.

Hung stated that it was not enough for the DPP government to establish the “Transformational  Justice Committee for Aborigines” to achieve their cause, adding that she would urge the legislative KMT caucus to promote substantive policies that would really benefit aboriginal people in Taiwan. She added that she hoped the protection of Taiwan’s aboriginal peoples could be enshrined in the Constitution.
