Ex-President Ma Begins U.S. Tour on Feb. 28

On invitations from U.S. academic institutions and a U.S. think tank, former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) set off on Feb. 28 for a 10-day tour to the United States that would take him to Washington, D.C., New York, and Boston. Ma is scheduled to return to the ROC on March 11. While in Boston, Ma is to visit his alma mater Harvard University to deliver a speech titled “From Harvard Law School to the Presidential Office of the Republic of China” on March 6, before flying to Washington later in the day. In the U.S. capital, Ma is also set to speak at one of the best known think tanks -- the Brookings Institution. Ma’s itinerary in Washington, DC has garnered wide attention as he is the first former president of ROC to visit Washington, DC.
During his stay in Washington, DC, Ma will spend most of his time meeting with members of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus (CTC), and had no plans to meet officials of the Trump administration. On his first day in Washington, Ma is to attend a luncheon and give speeches at the Brookings Institution, and in the evening, attend a banquet hosted by Stanley Kao (高碩泰), the ROC’s top representative in the U.S. In addition, Ma has meetings with CTC members on March 8th and in the morning of March 9th. Before flying back to the ROC on the evening of March 9th, he will attend a luncheon with Taiwan media in Washington, DC.
