Six-way Race: Pan Formally Announces Her Bid for KMT Chairmanship

February 25, 2017

Former Kuomintang (KMT) legislator Pan Wei-kang (潘維剛) officially announced her decision to run in the KMT chairmanship election at a press conference on February 24. The KMT chairmanship election, slated for May 20, has become a tight six-way race.

Pan stressed that the KMT needed a selfless leader for solidarity and devotion to the party. She pledged that she would initiate “a KMT reform” to win back trust from talents, youths and supporters and lead the KMT to fight in the 2018 elections.

A rumor has been circulating that Pan is the flank or relief pitcher for former Vice President Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) who aims to poach votes from incumbent KMT Chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) in the six-way election. Pan responded by saying that that was a crazy conspiracy theory, adding that she had called by phone or met with all the KMT bigwigs before officially throwing her hat into the ring. In addition, she also called Hung to discuss how to bring back members that had long lost contact with the party, Pan concluded.
