Mainland’s TAO Cited Metaphor in Buddhist Sutras to Compare Lack of 1992 Consensus

The cross-Strait communication mechanisms have been suspended since the DPP took office. In a regular news briefing in Beijing on April 26, Ma Xiao-guang (馬曉光), spokesman of the Mainland’s Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO), cited a metaphor about a three-story house in Buddhist sutras to compare the lack of political foundation of the 1992 Consensus in cross-Strait relations. The metaphor tells the story of a person admiring another’s three-story house, but asked a mason to build the same house without the first and second floors. Ma added that on the one hand, Taiwan destroyed the political common ground, and on the other, it hoped that the two sides of the Strait could resume dialogue. “If Taiwan has good faith, it should adhere to the 1992 Consensus,” he concluded.
The World Health Assembly (WHA) will be convened soon, but Taiwan has yet to receive a WHA invitation. In response to questions regarding Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, Ma pointed out that “the Mainland has repeatedly stated that Taiwan’s participation should be arranged through cross-Strait consultations under the one China principle.” “Everyone knows what caused the current suspension of the cross-Strait communication mechanisms,” he concluded.
